I never understood the point of inaccurate historical movies

Watching Reign is a guilty pleasure for me but I never quite understood the point of making a movie or TV Show about Mary, Queen of Scots, if you're not going to use Mary's life as an inspiration (insert any other movie/TV Show or historical character).

If you want to invent a new story and not be bounded by what happened in real life, just change the names. You can mention "inspired by real events" at the start if you want to make it a little more interesting. But if you're going to use Mary, Queen of Scots as an inspiration, actually use what happened in her life.

The fun part is filling in the gaps. Because there are gaps. But Mary's story is so interesting by itself that you don't even need to invent much to make an exciting movie or TV show about her. Here's the summary if you don't feel like clicking on the Wikipedia link above:

1. Grew up in France, married Francis II of France at a very early age. He died approximately a year after the wedding.

2. Got back to Scotland, a country she was born in but hadn't been in since she was a child. It was a hard adaptation but she started off pretty well.

3. Met Henry, Lord Darnley and married him in a pretty rushed wedding despite the fact that Queen Elizabeth had sent her a letter telling her that if she didn't marry him, she would be recognized heir to the throne of England. We will never know what she felt but the one would think that she actually liked him.

4. Became disillusioned with her husband very soon. By the time she was pregnant they were pretty much estranged. In a not so smart move, he killed her secretary in front of her.

5. Soon afterwards Mary's husband dies in very suspicious circumstances. Though it was never proven, the main suspect (to the point of it being drawn on the walls) was the Earl of Bothwell. Very soon after that, Mary marries that same earl. She was pregnant (probably conceived before marriage). (One of the big questions about Mary is whether she was an active plotter in her husband's murder, or just a passive approver.)

6. The Scots don't like the whole thing, rebellion, she runs, gets captured by Elizabeth, spends nineteen years in jail prior to being executed by her cousin Elizabeth.

That's just the main points. If you read up on her, you'll find a lot of interesting stuff - at least 7 seasons of a TV show.

So why make up wizardry, Bash (who the hell is Bash?!), four ladies that never existed and no-one cares about and so on when you have such an interesting life to draw a story on?
